My 2002 V6 gets 26 mpg in mixed stop-and- go and hiway (80 mph). In LA traffic, no less.

Gen5

I know it's a bit newer than you asked about but my 2006 Camry (4 cyl automatic) gets 27-28mpg (75% city, 25% hwy). I took a long trip two weeks ago and got 37.1 highway (all highway...no city at all). I set the cruse to 72mph and ran the AC most of the way.

My 02 SE 5-spd gets an average of 28-30MPG in everyday driving, and that's not babying it. I haven't taken a long trip with it, but the highway mileage must be a lot better. Wouldn't even consider a Corolla if I can get this much MPG out of a Camry.

Yes just pick whatever is the mileage king in your book. If MPG is your goal, above all, i'd consider a corolla.
After 25 years of 4 bangers, i chose thee Camry. No regrets.
