trailer wiring

Hi there! I am building a small trailer to pull behind my wife's '98 Camry, and I am told that wiring in trailer lights to these newer cars isn't as simple as it was in the old days. Does anyone know where I might be able to find instructions or a wiring diagram? I've also heard that sometimes you have to buy a kit that plugs directly into the car's wiring harness- is that true of the Camry? Thanks!

Wiring for a Camry is not difficult. A web search on trailer wiring with provide a lot of info. The wiring setups and plugs are standardized. You may want to wire your system to allow usage with other trailers.

I would think with a small trailer you can just tap into the cars wiring system. The Camry has a three-bulb system, turn signals, brake, and taillight. A lot of older cars used a two-bulb system; taillight and combo turn signal/brake light.

I think the Camry wire setup is as follows:

L/H Turn Red/Yellow
R/H Turn Green/Yellow
Stop Green/Red
Tail Green/Orange
