Sounds like you had some bad luck. Here is what I think you should do, or what I would do if I was in your situation, and I have been heh.
Unhook your negative from your battery.
Take the wire off from wherever you put it.
Look for and replace any blown fuses/fusible links
Leave the wire off.
Beg borrow steal an ohm meter
Take the bus/second car to a shop and get a manual with a schematic for your car's model and year also and ohm meter if you can't borrow one.
Ohm check your gauge wiring to make sure you didn't create any shorts.
Fix gauge wiring
Find out where said wire really goes.
Re-attach wire
Put negative back on battery
Pray to the car ghods and hope you didn't fry anything like your ECU
Take it out for a short drive around the block to make sure everything is OK. Don't go too far.
