Basic Transmission Question

I recently bought a '98 Camry with about 100k miles.
The check engine light has recently come on (I realize this may be a result of many things).

But also, the transmission takes a little too long to shift; typically it goes to 3200-3800 rpm before shifting from 1st to 2nd, and takes longer than it should once it reaches that level to shift into 2nd. When it does, there is a slight jerk, but not that bad. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th also take too long. And I'm not driving with lead feet at all.

I realize that this might be expected from a car with this many miles, but does it signify a transmission that is on its way to the grave (AKA, is the only solution a brand new transmission?)

Or is this a less major problem and might only take a quick fix?

Any help much appreciated.

nm,

try to have all the necessary fluids and maintenence parts changed. Oils, fliters, fluids, belts, etc.. It might be expensive but at least you know you're starting fresh on these. As for the vehicle condition, there is no way of knowing the use and abuse by the prior owner.

Get a helper and count how ling it takes to accelerate to 100km.
Then also note the shift points.

Search or look at the sticky section for transmission kick down cable adjustment.
