Opening the Camry gearbox?

Hi

i have a 1987 camry sv21 with 3s-fe engine. the gearbox is a bit messed up and it keeps jumping out of 2nd gear. i been told this is the synchry rings thats gotten worn out.

im thinking about opening the gearbox up to repair it myself, have anyone here done this and knows if its pretty easy to fix or not?

i have opened many gearboxes for rwd cars, but never for fwd, this gearbox looks a bit more mysterious than the rwd boxes, so im kinda curious if the job is as difficult as it looks like.

thanks for ur answers

If you are on a steep budget, I'd consider a used one from a junkyard first before tearing into this one. There are other parts besides the synchros that will need attention, and even if you are successful it will be probably be nothing more than a patch for a few thousand more miles.

I'd consider a rebuilt trans, because if you skip the labor and install it yourself you will save quite a bit.

Thanks for your answer.

Im considering buying another gearbox, but i think its a bit too expensive, this car doesnt have that long life left anyway (rust) and if i can fix the gearbox myself and it will last another 2 years im happy with that.

so im still wondering if anyone here have tried to open this box, or a simular one, and have some tips or thought about the job of replacing the synchro rings.
