i went to get an alignment and the place told me i should get new tires soon...and that was last year.....and i went again this year and the guy said really soon... in between the threads there's a line running all the way around... and minor cracks around the edges....is it really that bad?

long as there are no bubbles, large gashes, major deterioration anywhere, you will be fine.
and as skewe said, ur handling will change only a tad, but i wouldnt do something like autox on em, you wouldnt want the cracks to get too large and potentionally cause a blowout.
Looks to me like those tires could possibly be good for another 5 or 10,000 miles. when the time comes to change 'em I'd put the two good ones on the back and put the new ones on front and you could possibly get another 5,000 from the back ones. And this might soften the blow to your checking acct.
My Dad used to drive his truck tires until you could see the steel cords! Not something i would do unless i were starving. But then these tires were like 8 or 10 ply tires and not as thin as car tires.
From your pictures, like the other fellows said - they look good for a while.
Look as though they are dry rotted to me. If it gets too bad the tire "can" (but not too likely) pop. How many miles have they been on, how long have you had them?

Look for the TIRE WEAR INDICATOR on your tire. If your treads are flush with the wear indicator, it's time to get new tires. if you don;t know what a wear indicator is read up on it on the net
You can see the wear indicators in his pic...tread wear doesnt look bad....just the dry rotted looking cracks along the edge of the tire. Just keep an eye on them and you should be fine for awhile or atleast til you can save up for new ones
well i've had them for about 10k miles and they came with my rims (aka used) so i rather not risk blowing a tire on a trip so i went out and got a set of kumho estca spt
and they did look rotten... the pic didn't really show the big crack that ran down in between the threads... oh wells rather be safe than sorry

Keep an eye on the cracking round the edges, it looks ok at the moment but heat can cause them to open up more and obviously as they get older the rubber will deteriorate. If the cracking gets worse then I would advise new ones but I shouldn't worry at the moment. A lot of tyre fitters here in the UK are paid commision on every new tyre they sell, so if it's the same in your part of the world they will always try to convince you that you need new ones. Trust me, I used to be one !!!!

I was going to mention that crack between the tread blocks. That I would be questioning.
I don't see a big deal on the cracking on the tread blocks. I had some of that on some previous tires.
