4th Generation Help: Ignition problem?

2.2L Gen 4.5

Whenever i turn off the engine, i hear a spark igniting sound immediately after the engine cuts off. Like there are 3-4 sparks discharging. I cannot pin point where is it coming from.

I changed my spark plugs like 8k miles ago (Denso) and I just changed my spark plug wires 2 days ago (NGK) as I thought that it would fix it. That did not help. I know it is coming from somewhere which is near the engine block.

Any idea what is causing the problem?

It may be parts of your exhaust system crackling as they cool down. If this is the source of the noise, it's normal. You can try sticking your head under the car and have someone else shut down the car for you. Try to determine if the exhaust system is the source of the noise.

The first thing i'd try, is drive the car into a closed garage, at night, or someplace else thats very dark. And then pop the hood, have someone cut the engine and watch the engine. And look for actual sparks, (likely sources - spark plug connections, plug wires, distributor if equipped). Perhaps one of these components is loose or cracked or otherwise defective.

If you see no sparks, then maybe it is time to pull codes, perhaps it could be some sensor or relay thats been broken but still continues to function.

If all of these come to a dead end, bear in mind that Mike may be right, when an engine cools it will often make some pinging and snapping sounds that sound very close to a spark plug snap. But i'm presuming this isnt the first car you've ever driven and that you'd know the difference.

I am pretty confident that it is not the exhause or the exhause or anything that is expanding or contracting. That sound is pretty close to a spark igniting or discharging.

It is a distributorless system, replaced spark plug and spark plug cables.

I will follow your instructions on trying that at night. It might work.

Ground wires?? No i have not replaced that but I doubt that it could be an issue rite?

I have a 93 and a 00 and both are camry, my 93 never caused this prob but i will check the ground wires nevertheless
