for the first time, i read the manual since i got the car (i got it earlier this year). i've read that my '92 v6 is suppose to use 91 octane or higher. i've never put 91 octane on it. i always use 87, mainly because it is the cheapest
what octane do you guys run? i've read in a few therad that most people also use 87 octane. but im not sure how their car runs, better or worst? some actually think that they get better mileage with higher octane, thus actually saving money. what do you guys/gals think?
p.s. my car has about 183,xxx miles.

my 1mz-fe in the camry takes 89 octane, actually. the previous owner said he mostly used 87 but 89 is technically a bit better. don't know why but it feels smoother compared to when he had it.

I always put 89 but I just tried 91 again and I seem to get better gas mileage with 91 in the tank. If thats the case, it might actually be cheaper to run on 91. :/

on the 1mz, you don't NEED 91 octane per se, since just about any car can run on 87 octane, but 91 is optimal- both better mileage and better power
with 87, going up a hill on a hot day with a car full of people = pinging
there's no performance difference between 91 and 94, but I've seen slightly better mileage with 94, but not sure if it's enough to justify the cost difference sometimes
nothing but 91+ goes in my car

True, nothing but 91+ goes in my car too. I've tried 89 and i felt a difference between that and 93 octane which is what they have as premium down here.

i think i'm gonna try using 91 since my car is almost out of gas, this is probably the best time to change. i'm gonna see how much more mileage i will get with 91 compare to 87. i mostly drive in the city, and i do drive alot. i deliver pizza on the weekends to pay for books and tuition fees. so i would've gotten atleast a tank by next week.

i don't think imma be doing this pretty soon. first, i need to save up enough money to fill up my tank all the way.
I have a 2002 V6, and i use the cheapest gas, 87. The engine runs fine. Of course it would run "better" on higher octane but every car does.
I get 25 mpg or better, in LA traffic too. I even tried the aceotone trick for more mileage and carefully monitored the results for a month, but there was no improvement.
I knew the milage penalty when i bought it. So I just suck it up and put in the cheap stuff. The car doesn't seem to mind
i always use the highest grade i can find for my 92 SE 5spd. better performance, cleaner revs and a seemingly healthier engine. 94 is the highest around here unless i go to the track. and i wouldnt take my camry to the track.
what about 2.2 5sfe engine which only says 87 will using 93 (thats what i have here) make any difference because ive been using 93 since i got the car and was wondering am i really getting better gas mileage.. dont wanna put 87 till i hear that 93 aint doing squat for me.

I'm going to do the same thing.
Only there's no 91 in my area.
It's 93 and name brand gas for 93 is about $3.25 a gal now.
