Whats up guys, this might be a dumb question but a friend of mine wants to drill into his carbon fiber trunk to mount the wing/spoiler he has. I have know idea if it is possible, might damage the weave but i dont know. Anyone know if this is possible. Help me out guys.

3rd Generation

A bunch of tuner garages in japan have done this for one application or another. I only have experience with abs and plexin, so I can't tell you how to reseal the weave where you drill. One thing your friend might consider though, would be that anyone who has done this, has had to reinforce the spoiler through the trunk with rods that connect to the body. Either that or something similar. (brackets, aluminum reinforcement) The spoiler your friend has, has to be extremely light because the trunk alone won't support the weight of your average spoiler and will rip off at high speeds. (happened to my friend's drift 240)

thanks for the info, my buddy has a veilside wing, those things are pretty light. Do you know where i can find pictures on how other people mounted wings on their cars with carbon fiber trunks. Ive check out google and couldnt find very much. Maybe i should ask a tuner company from japan...

You want a hole cutting bit and not a drill bit. Countersink after with a grinding stone and that should give you a good surface to seal with glue.

Reinforcing... I would like pics and dimensions.

I would assume that resin would be the best type of sealant, but epoxy would probably work also

Most CF and composites use epoxy, but for this app, it is a hole, and you do not want to bond the wing mount to the trunk. If you use a sharp tapered reamer and a die grinder, you will get a smooth cut edge.
