Dropped fuel tank, now no start and no fuel indication on gauge

Hi all,

Thanks in advance.

I needed to replace a rusted out fuel line on my father-in-laws 1993 camry. Well we cut the exhaust and dropped the tank. When we dropped the tank, it hung by the wires going to the fuel pump and sending unit.

After completing the repair to the fuel line, we put everything back together, but the car won't start, and the fuel gauge shows an empty tank. We put in about 3 gallons of gas, so I would imagine it should have read atleast 1/8 tank.

My questions are:

1) is there a fuel cutoff switch to cut the power to the fuel pump in the event of an accident? If so where is it located?

2) Where do the white /black stripe and blue /black stripe go from the the fuel tank. I woud like to check continuity in those lines, but I have no idea where to look.

The only thing I can think of is that we pulled a couple wires out of the connector when the wires were holding up the tank. ( I didn't see the access to the wiring until AFTER we dropped the tank.

3) aNY OTHER suggestions as far as what can be wrong? We doi not hear the fuel pump when the key is switched on, we didn;t get any voltage on the ble and white wires (I figure those wires are for teh fuel pump as they are bigger then the wires for teh sending unit.

Any helpful comments would be apreciated.

Thanks

Marty

to get to the wires it's under the rear seats... best to check all the fuses first and see if all the wires/connectors are ok

If your fuel gage is not working the wires to the tank sensor must not be hooked up correctly. I think the fuel gage sensor wires are Yel/Red, Yel/Blue and Blk/Red.

The White/Black and Blue/Black wires go to the fuel pump. You will not get voltage to the pump unless you are cranking the engine or it is running. The fuel pump cut off relay prevents this.

If everything is hooked up OK and still does not work, check the fuses.

"When we dropped the tank, it hung by the wires going to the fuel pump and sending unit."

The problem has to be in those wires. They definitely were not made to support the weight of the tank. They are old and probably rather brittle. You may not have to drop the tank again to access them. There is a cutout for replacing the fuel pump under the rear seat. It should be 4 screws to remove the plate to access the pump and it's wiring. There is a generation 3 manual stickied at the top of this forum. Download it and go to the section on engine electrical. If the wiring information you need is not there, then it should be in the section on body electrical. If all else fails, just splice in some new wires to the connector at the pump and splice them as far foreward as you can and see if the car now runs.

Good luck.

Yeah id say that since you "hung" the tank from the wires..you've either pulled them from there terminals, or internally broken them. Grab a multimeter and check continutity between both ends of the wires to see if theres any breaks.

You mention the fuel pump cut off relay, where is this device located?

Right where do the blue/black and white/black wires go from teh connector at teh fuel pump. I mean are they on the passenger side access? or in the engine?

You mentioned that the car won't start. Is it turning over and not catching or is it not even turning over?

Followup - end of thread

It appears thhat toyota put an extra connector about a foot away from the connector that ghoes to the fuel pump. Thaqt connector got unplugged. I was able to determine this through the drqawings on this site.

Thanks site operator also thanks to evetyone that helped.

Glad the car is repaired and that it was something that simple.
