2nd Generation what do i need to rebuild on my Tranny

I have a 1989 camry with the 3sfe engine and the a140e tranny. 138,000 miles

the car was driven with the wrong trans fluid in it for a short time .. the fluid and filter were changed.. the fluid that came out this time looked very grey with lots of fine shiny particles (maybe the clutch disks?)

The problem I have is that the car will not drive when put into foward or reverse.
the car only moves when the engine is reved hard and only very slowly.

The engine and tranny are removed.. I'm suspecting the torque converter .. anybody have any input? I want to fix this as cheaply as possible.

Thanks for the Help

Finn, the trans is worn out - the grey fluid means clutch material in the fluid. Cheapest fix i can imagine is to find a similar trans at a junkyard that might have some miles left on it. Even then have it checked out, if you can.

It will be easily more than $1000 US to rebuild it if you don't do yourself ( which I don't advise to do). Go with a JDM one. They have a smaller torque converter=less moving weight, and most are cheap and come with a warranty. I still got till October on my warranty. It drops in with no problem. Be sure to clean the tranny cooler to remove metal particles that will hurt your new tranny. And don't forget to fill the differential.
