3rd Generation Carbon trunk Group buy feeler

This is to gauge the interest of people wanting a carbon trunk for the gen 3 and 3.5 camry. Right now i am just seeing if we can get a list of people who would do it before i actually get really serious with it. I am in contact with VIS and seibon and both say we need at least 15+ with a price range of 500-600 dollars.

Carbon trunk:

1. Rdizzle
2. K'tatra
3. shingouki808

I would think all the people who wanted swegptians trunk would want in on this. There is a better chance of having more made then waiting for 1 of the 15 to sell.

another group buy that will eventually go sour because some people really won't want to dish out that much money. good luck folks.

as far as i know, UFoz has the only mold ever made and no chance in hell is he gonna give it away (or so he said before)

Probably, but better to try then just sit here and wish i had one and not do anything. Doing this i may succeed, not doing it i will definitly fail. And its been awhile since the last buy, we might have enough people with incentive enough to do it this time.

Carbon trunk:

2. K'tatra

4 in the first day isn't to bad. That just leaves us needing 11-16 people.

Do you mean spoiler or trunk lid? Spoiler i would like to have, the factory one looks pretty good to me. The prices i have seen are $200 painted.
But i think you must be talking trunk lid - to me the question is why? If it is for weight savings, you'd lose more by tossing the spare.

^^Yes it's for the trunk lid.

And the spare has been tossed, along with most other non-essential parts of the car. (including cruise control)

I'd take one. Money already waiting.
For the record, not all of us had a camry when the group buy went. I just got back from Iraq and found this site by accident. In the last two months I've spent over $2K on my car with another $6k worth of stuff planned or on the way. If you don't want to make more then it would only make sense that maybe someone else has the desire to have one and will purchase from whoever offers one. I know you want to keep them rare. That is why he has to do what he has to do. I don't see it as him stepping on your toes. I see it as you shooting yourself in the foot. Just my opion though. For the record, I would buy from you UFO if you made them again.

Just a note for all you folks who want in: with a lighter CF trunk, it will NOT stay up of its own accord. It's not that big a deal, but it's something that most people don't even think about. You might be able to rig some sort of stand or lift for it pretty easily... or you can keep a hockey stick in your trunk. Plenty of ways to work around it, but just f.y.i.

i agree allen, a lot of these members werent even around when you did the group buys... i couldnt imagine spending that much on my car when you ran the group buys, but now here i am, thousands of dollars later. a lot of people have come and gone since the last GB...

as for keeping them rare, why does it matter? you have a turbo camry, isnt that rare enough? even if VIS started making them for the market tomorrow, they would still be rare because A. barely anyone mods a 10 year old minimum camry and b. if they do, they probably wouldnt pay that much for a trunk.

good luck, Im considering it but it isnt in my budget... i can see $600+ getting me a lot more bang for my buck, i.e. putting it towards performance, a tranny swap, seats, coilovers, stuff like that... but i wish you luck, dont be discouraged, but at the same time this is no easy task.

Sorry If i am stepping on toes here but as you stated, road racing needs every pound that is not needed off the car. My entire purpose is weight savings. I would not bring this to group buy if i thought i could afford one myself, but at almost 2 grand, it is just out of my price range.

I am well aware that this may not work but all you can do is try.

Diengcamry, do you want your name added, i couldn't tell?

all you have to do to get it to open is rig up an air strut like the hood has that will allow it to stay open, and it will also dampen any slamming of the trunk or other quick movements that might damage the CF

^^and things like carbon are stronger then steel by WEIGHT, which means an equivalent weight of steel is weaker. That does not mean that it can take the same abuse, since it really is fairly fragile. When it is epoxied it is prone to cracking or shattering if abused.

Ufoz- Mmm..two sides to the coin here.
One side is, just because you own a mould to this "uber rare" trunk lid, does that mean that no one else is allowed to have one/make one...because its in disrespect for the people that shelled out the cash?? Thats sorta like saying, your tredding on the toes of people that bought a brand new Gen 3 back in 1992 for $25k...and now you can get them much cheaper...

The other side. Comes to a personal level. My kit on my car is pretty unique and to my knowledge, no one else has one like it. So i can understand if someone were to create it again (like your trunk), that you'd feel odd about it. Nothing you can do i guess, but its like an Enzo .. only limited numbers...and thats what makes it good.

In any case, it will be interesting if you can get 20 people to upfront $600...
