Hi all,
At what point did they modify the 6 cylinder camry engines to make them interference engines and what was it they did to these motors to make them so?

Question

I was looking at the Gates timing belt website and they had the 1MZ-FE engine listed as an interference engine from 1998 on. I was wondering if Toyota had changed the valve clearance or compression ratio by raising the piston height or whatever. Just curious if something had changed or if there was some problems with the earlier engines that influenced this difference in the listing. I have a 96 Avalon with a 1MZ-FE thats not supposed to be interference and a 2001 Solara 1MZ-FE that is. Hey, whats the deal???

The 3.3L 3MZ-FE engine is one of the few Toyota engines with a timing belt that is an interference engine from what I rememeber. This engine is only on fairly recent Toyotas (2004-2006 Camry SE V6, Solara V6, Highlander V6, Sienna V6 and the Lexus ES330 and RX330).

However, this engine was short-lived as the 3.5L 2GR-FE (with timing chain) was introduced recently to replace the 3MZ-FE.
