4th Generation No Cat or High-Flow Cat...????

Sup guys..

I have a 1998 XLE V6...

I've been thinking about doing something with my exhaust system..

I already have a MagnaFlow muffler...

I've heard many people say that if you remove the Catalytic Converter from the exhaust system and replace it with a same or slightly larger diameter pipe instead, it would give you a noticeable better acceleration and a bit more performance... However, this would make the car much more noisy...

My other option is removing the stock Cat and buying a Stainless Steel Mirror Finish MagnaFlow Cat... Would this give me more performance without going to the noise problem...??

What would you suggest..???

Thanks for the input...

Just put in the high flow cat, you will gain performance, but not have a load exhaust that stinks.

a high flow cat would be more noticable with performance if you went turbo

it's known that no cat + exhaust = louder idle and different note.

but you've got a good muffler on there so i don't think it would get raspy or annoying.
anyways with a high flow cat it will sound louder because your opening up you exhaust more. it should still sound deep and throaty with your current exhaust, because your muffler does a good job in silencing down the exhaust already

They're called test pipes... dunno if camry's have a sensor on the cat but if they do then most likely you'll get a CEL from one. They're also definitely alot cheaper than getting a hfc. Sound is usually pretty nice with a test pipe...plus a little exhaust smoke on WOT. If you got a huge turbo, maybe some flames out the pipes.

I just had a Magnaflow muffler for a while and recently got a 2.25" exhaust done. I have 2.25" piping from the flex pipe (no cat) to a 2.25" resonator then 2.25" piping to the Magnaflow. It has a beautiful sound at idle and screams when you floor. I just added a CAI (thanks 2wickedtoyz) and it now sounds a tad bit raspier but still sounds alright. I'm also getting headers in the next few weeks. Should sound decent as a whole (headers, cai, 2.25" piping w/Magnaflow))

The shop where I had the exhaust done just went ahead and removed the cat without me knowing. When I first looked under the car I was like WTF? where's the cat? I called the shop and they said they removed it because most people who tune their cars and upgrade their exhausts usually remove them anyway. He also added how down here in Fl there aren't any emissions so it doesn't really matter.

Everyone has their own arguments and opinions, but I don't have a cat and i'm fine without it.

Anyone has an idea of this..?? Does a Gen 4 V6 has a sensor on the Cat...?? This would kill my plans of removing it...

there is NO sensor on the converter., the only sensors in the exhaust system are the o2 sensors.

If your cat is in good shape, you'll only see afew horsepower around the peak horsepower & higher. Might add up to around 5.

Having built afew test-pipes. Just use a mechanical o2 simulator. Buy yourself a spark plug antifouler. Drill the inside out so the sensor has about 1mm of room. Then thread the inside to accept the o2 sensor, weld that on your pipe & be done with it.

My suggestion is to forget the test pipe for now & build a y-pipe. Unless your cat is clogged, you're only going to get alittlebit with a test pipe. The test pipe can be done at the same time as the y-pipe also.

We don't have emissions controls in my country, my Camry is JDM, so I think I don't have sensors in my cat..

I'd like to know what would exactly happen if I remove my cat, and what diameter "test pipe" I should put in to fill that space.... Same size, bigger, smaller..??

The same size. Being an OBD-II computer, it still most likely has both a cat & a post cat o2 sensor. Hello mass production. If you have one & ditch it. You'll be graced with a CEL & possibly different tables.

My car had 3 cats on it and I removed one. I don't notice that much of a difference, it does sound louder though with 2.5" piping and the removed cat.

The two cats were on the Y pipe with some sensors somewhere around them, i forgot

that's on my gen 5

Has anyone actually removed the cat on a Gen 4 V6...??? I don't wanna make a decision "hoping" there's no sensor on the cat...

There being a post-cat lambda O2 sensor is not really in question. It's an OBD-II spec car. It's got the sensor. Just use a mechanical o2 simulator on it.

Seriously tho. Just look under the car...

just listen to what toysrme is saying- even if you have a post-cat sensor (which you probably do), a simulator will do the trick
