Newbie Question: How-to install fuel filter

Let me start off by saying that I am not very knowledgeble when it comes to cars. My 93 4-cylinder Camry is having troubles running. It will start up fine but it will stop running after a second unless I continue to keep my foot on the gas pedal. The moment I let go of the gas the car will stall out. My friend who knows more than me about cars thought that it might be the fuel filter. Went to the store bought the proper fuel filter, and started to take it off. I can get off the top part fine, but after than I don't know how to get it off. It appears to be bolted to the side of the chassis (body?? don't know proper name).

Could someone please tell me how to properly remove the old filter and install the new one? Also, does this seem like the proper action to be taking given the situation? I've had the car for 3 years and put 34K on it, never changing the filter once. Who knows when the previous owner replaced it.

Did you also remove the metal line from the bottom of the filter?

Use 2 wrenches. One to hold the filter and another on the fitting that screws into the bottom of the filter.

Theres a hex shaped portion on the bottom of the filter that you can put a wrench around.

Use a flare nut wrench on the fitting.

Then unbolt the filter from the car. Theres a mounting strap that holds it in place.

This part can't be stressed enough. You can easily strip the nuts that hold the lines to the filter if you don't use the correct tool...

I don't have the correct tools to get under the pump because i'm stranded so I have to wait for someone to lend me them. Another car friend of mine said that it might be the idle air controller, is that a possibility as well?

A number of issues could be causing that same problem. Does it sound and run well while your foot is on the gas? If so, you can probably clean the IAC and fix the problem...
