3rd Generation Power Window Wire Repair/replace @ Drivers Door

GREETINGS!

i have a 92 camry. only one of my power windows [drivers door] is working. i have the door panel removed as i've read here and understand the wires can break/detiorate in the vicinity of where they pass through the door.

1- how do you "peel back" the rubber boot at the door enough to see the wires inside it?- does it have to be cut? mine will not slip back enough in either direction to see ANY wires.

2- is the area of the broken wires usually under the rubber boot between the door and the body, or where they actually pass through into the door? how do you determine which wires need to be repaired if they or the insulation is not visibly damaged?

3- how do i isolate the problem to be in the wires and not the switches?

any other tips or info related to this repair would be greatly appreciated!

happy motoring,

chris

1. Remove that wiring harness from the car. Unplug it from both ends (door and the car), then remove it.

On the car the harness plugs into a junction box behind the drivers side kick panel.

2. I would say under the rubber boot, since that part flexes back/forth when you open/close the door.

3. Inspect the wires for cracks, breaks, etc.. You can also check for continuity with a DMM.

Can their individual switches control the passenger windows? The passenger window switches have a separate power wire (Blue) going to each switch. If none of the individual controls work, check this wiring.

no - the individual switches do not; where are the blue wires you speak of - coming through the drivers door or does each switch at each door have to be checked for a faulty blue wire?
thanks!

I had a problem with the pass. side door lock. In exploring I figured out that there were two ground wires. Since you are experiencing problems with multiple functions it is probably a common wire between them and this is often ground wires. I wound up just snaking a new wire through the rubber tube and then splicing it into the old wire. Worked great. I used one of the strips of metal in a windshield wiper blade to snake the wire through the tube. Work slow and easy feel it as it progresses. I never did figure out how to get the plastic plug through the holes in the body and door.

Hi 88 -

on my car on the door it snakes off in several directions for various functions so there are no plugs to disconnect. i'm going to pull the kick panel and hopefully i can snake it out through the hole on the pillar, then remove the rubber gaiter and inspect and repair the wires. hope that works! good idea on the DMM. mine, like me - is analog ...

thanks very much for your input!

chances are it is the switch itself... most window problems are first the motor and second the master window switch.
