Gen5 Changing the lights on the shifter?

Can anyone help me on how to change the light on the shifter that lights up the PRND21. What type of bulb is it and should i get a regular bulb or an LED? Thanks!

open up the center console (where the aux 12 V is), and get a grip on the plate that covers the shifter area. just pull up on it, disengaging the clips. On the shifter itself, there are a couple clips holding the cover to it... just use a screw driver to pry it up. note that this step is not entirely necessary to get the bulb out, but helps you see where the bulb actually is. on the driver's side of the shifter, you should see a blue coated wire going up into the bulb. if you are very dexterous and flexible, you can try to get your fingers up there to twist the socket for the bulb out, or use pliers. The bulb is a #74 bulb... but personally i don't like the way colored bulbs look and it actually kinda fades after a while. i made a custom LED array to go in place of the bulb, looks very nice.

Yeah i'd get an LED array or a regular bulb. I use the regular bulb and it's decent.

I replied to your PM, but I'll post here so others know. DON'T get an LED. The light beam is too focused, and some of the letters don't get lit as brightly as the others. Stick with an incandescent bulb because it disperses the light evenly.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

yup, for the most part LED replacement bulbs are quite useless in terms of even light output. that's why i made an LED array that goes the length of the PRND2L lettering.

my take on the shifter lights
Just used a single 4" cathode tube and tapped into the wires for the stock bulb.

I sanded down the cubes at the end of the cathode tube and cut some of the plastic underneath the shifter bezel to fit the tube. It's really bright and gets pretty warm. Another thing is, it's more of an on or off light so it won't dim linearly with the rest of the console lights. May be annoying when driving at night, because it's bright enough to cast some shadows on the ceiling. I'm leaving it in for now though =)

very nice snicko, i just added a blue led under mine. Some parts are dim but it's ok. wish it were a little brighter though.

I have a white LED in my Gen 3 and it's great. you just need to get the CORRECT type. I even put White LED's in my Gen 3 cluster. Took $50 to finally get one type that was perfect though, but they disperse the light great.

I DID have a white Wide Angle single LED in there till I dropped it under the carpet like the moron I am. 1st one on website: http://superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html

So I replaced it witht he 5 LED bulb (also on that page). Same as I have in my Instrument Cluster. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Mine used to light up, but now don't....Is it a simple swap of the bulb? Does anyone have the bulb type?

Depending on the car, its either a #74 or a #24 bulb. Mine was a #24. Some people have #74. They aren't interchangeable. I first bought a #74, and it didn't fit... it was too small.
