Gearbox bands

Hi all,

I have a 91 Camry, the more square one, same as the 89, 90 ones, anyway it's auto and when the gears change it feels really violent. i heard that you need to 'adjust the bands.'

Is this hard? Can it be done at home?

One external item you can check is to see if the throttle valve is opening completely when you push the gas pedal down.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin #345 about replacing worn out check balls in the transmission manifold. The old check balls are black and the new are blue. There are two diameters so beware. This and the other items that might be the cause require dropping the transmission oil pan (in car). I don’t think the bands are adjustable in these transmissions. Get the service manual info (available on TN Camry) and decide if you want to get inside the transmission.
