Question Antenna Grinding Noise

My 96 Camry antenna makes a long and loud grinding noise after it has gone up. Is it dying, fixable or what? Any ideas?

2nd Generation antenna motor is grinding/broken

yes, your antenna motor is still running because it hasn't realized that the antenna is all the way down (or up ) and need to stop. The noise is the gears grinding. I have a '96 also. I ran the antenna up all the way and then unplugged the cable to the motor so it is permanently up. I considered putting in a switch so I could manually run the antenna up and down, but never got around to it.

your reel is dying, the plastic gears in there died like that on me last year. do the s2k conversion (real or ebay) and you'll be happier with it.

But you can replace the mast. About $20 and if your lucky, (the old mast hasn't broken yet) I think you can just pull the antenna out while it's running up. Then you feed in the new one while it's running down. Someone correct me if that's wrong, it's been a while.

You have to take the ring with the 2 slots in it off first. Then turn the radio on and the old mast should come right out in to your hands. Notice which way the teeth on the bottom plastic part go. Now feed the new mast back in slightly with the teeth pointed in the same direction and turn the radio off. The new mast should be pulled right in. When it is down, reinstall the ring.
