Negotiating with Insurance adjuster

Well, it finally happened, a (expletive deleted) lady T-boned me on a city road. I am really going to miss my 90 Camry.

Anyway, the insurance company (I had uninsured coverage and she wasn't covered) is offering me $1,950 to total out the car. Anybody have any ideas how to get them to pony up some more dollars? I have yet to find one that is selling for that and I don't know the ins and outs of negotiating with an insurance adjuster.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Kep

Really sorry to hear that. Glad you're ok. Hard to fight your own company. Might get actual selling prices for similar condition/milage '90 Camry's. Take the photos, written or advertised quotes etc. and ask the adjuster to find a replacement for under $2K because you can't. If that doesn't work ask/demand (nicely) to contact someone above him. If you annoy them enough in a nice way they may decide to up it a bit just to get rid of you. Pretty much tho, we've always come out behind which is why some people have injuries such as sore backs and necks. Then you often get your expenses paid plus a bit more for pain and suffering. Here it's about equal to the doctor's bills. (They pay $1000 in medical bills and they offer $1000 for pain and suffering) Certainly not suggesting you fake anything tho.

Dave's makes some very good points. An insurance company needs to start somewhere on what they offer. Many people just take the first offer. You can come up with your own value and make a counter offer. If you bug them long enough (be polite) they might up the amount.

You need to find someone who can explain how the insurance company works. Perhaps finding a lawyer skilled in insurance negotiation and paying for a ½ hour consultation might be worth it. Not saying to get a lawyer, just to get a heads up on how things work.

Sometimes when an insurance company finds out there are no medical injuries, their incentive to work with the claimant is greatly reduced.

Don’t settle or sign a release until you are satisfied with the payout or think you have reached the end of line. There is no rush to settle.

All insurance companies are not difficult to work with, many are very good.
