Air/fuel sensor vs an oxygen sensor HELP!!!

1998 toyota camry 2.2l 4 cyl

oxygen sensor goes bad (which i now believe to have been an air/fuel sensor) i understand the air/fuel sensor has a wider range than the 02 sensor. I replaced it with a universal oxygen sensor from advance auto parts. they said it was the part for my vehicle. i had the codes cleared and about 30 hours later the light came back on with code 1133 manufacturer controlled air fuel metering. is this because it is not an air fuel sensor? is it necessary to replace it with an air fuel sensor? i have tried searching and reading. all that has done is to thoroughly confuse myself. please help!!!

go to the dealership and purchase an air/fuel ratio sensor then. Make sure its the front one and not the rear O2 sensor

The P1133 is a manufacturer specific code. I would give toyota a call and see the specific parts it refers to.

There is no such thing as an air/fuel sensor that is different than an oxygen sensor.

CA emissions A/T Camrys from 1998-on have A/F ratio sensors rather than O2 sensors. These are essentially wideband O2 sensors for better emissions control.

They ARE different. The A/F ratio sensor will have lower resistances between the terminal pins than the traditional O2 sensor. The A/F sensor is also grounded to the ECU not the chassis.

The A/F ratio sensors on my 1MZ list for around $230 at the dealer.

I have 3 that I won't be using. It's the same 4-pin design as the A/F ratio sensors for the 5SFE. I tested the terminal pins, and they are in spec with resistances. Let me know if you want any of them.
