changing rev limiter on automatic?

ok so how do you change the rev limiter on an auto? i have a gen 3 i4. when in full throttle mine only goes to about 6000. sometimes not even. i'm going to be dong head work and it will be able to rev higher. but can you change the limit when its in drive for it to go that high or would have to shift it manually to get it as high as you would like?

why do you want it to rev higher?

when you get above that RPM you start to lose power again

why do i wanna change it? because hopefully by the end of the summer i'll have my headwork and cams done and by the end of next winter i'll have my turbo on and to get the best power of the cams and the turbo i'll have to rev higher than 6000 if i want to make the power i want. i dont know for sure if i will have to rev that high to get there but i was still wondering how you would change it. if it was difficult or not to do. i know someone on either this bored or teamsc3 has changed it on the auto.

Come back when you have your turbo, it's too early to ask this question.

- get the ECU rechipped for a higher rev limit. As for which chip, shop around.

- You will need to get a automatic ECU controller which changes the shiftpoint on automatics. Levelten (http://www.levelten.com) has the upgrade available. You are looking at $1000 USD for this upgrade.

My suggestion -- swap a 5 speed if you want to rev. Even if your valvetrain and bottom-end can take the higher redline, your tranny won't. Most of the time, RPM = excessive heat to the tranny which will eventually lead to failure. There is something called "stall speed" for automatics; and a higher stall speed (matching your powerband) lets the engine stay in the best powerband for the longest possible time. It is better to get a higher stall converter upgrade opposed to upping the redline.

thanks tony. well when my stock tranny blew up i went to level10. they rebuilt my whole trans. new diff, casing, clutch packs everything. my converter was raised to a 2800-3000 stall speed. it was a lot of money but i knew with the upgrades i was going to do i needed the tranny to take it. i also looked into the 5 speed swap but i couldnt find anyone around to do it so i just got the auto rebuilt. i guess i can call sam and see what he says about ECU controller.

What do you know, they lowered their prices on the shiftronic ECU! Before it was $1098 USD, now they cut that price in half
