2nd Generation Overdrive Button

I'm never on this side of TN but I need some help and fast.
My Dad picked up my 7 year old son this evening in his 90 camry V6. He made the mistake of letting my son ride up front and my son made the mistake of pressing the overdrive button. Now it won't engage back into overdrive. The dash light says it is engaged but I know its not because of the rpm's. The question is to you'll, is the Overdrive switch out (broken) or is the solenoid on the transmission not engaging the torque converter or ....
Help,please.

The overdrive light is connected directly in line with the switch. As such it does not provide a direct indication as if the O/D is working. If the O/D light blinks, trouble codes are being stored in the ECU (if applicable to this year). The O/D system has a lockout switch to prevent operation if coolant is below say 130F. There is also an O/D relay located on the transmission. When the O/D is engaged, control is through the transmission computer. You can troubleshoot the system but it requires service info.

well...since you want ideas....I don't know about the gen2 camrys, but usually the o/d button only comes on when the o/d is OFF, so I'm not sure when you say that the o/d light says that it is engaged

and the way that the switch works is that the car normally always goes into o/d unless it gets a signal from the button

Thats what i meant, the button is on and the light is off, still no overdrive.

The light is connected to the switch. The light being on or off only means the switch is working, not the O/D system. You need to check further into the system.

If the gen2 tranny is computer controlled through the main ecu or its own relay/ecu you should be able to reset it. By default settings your O/D should be ON. Try disconnecting the battery for 15 good minutes to drain power from the ecu. This may force it into a reset.
