do all 4cyl 2.2L camry's act like mine?

hello all,
this 92 camry le 2.2l 4cyl is my first car. ive never really driven any other 4 cylinders of this age so i do not know what is acceptable in terms of performance and what isnt. my father has a 96 avalon v6 which has absolutely no problem when stepping hard on the gas to accelerate.

basically on the freeway when i want to step on it to pass another car or any other instance where id step real hard (just testing it..i dont speed.) my car would bog and i believe it is because my car is hitting a flatspot with a sudden rush of air and no fuel to even out the fuel/air ratio. the engine makes a deep bogging and weak sound for a fraction of a second and slowly catches up on the rpms. now i know the camry isnt the fastest car but is this acceptable or is there something wrong with my camry?

when i get back to school (im in high school taking an automotive elective) i plan on running a diagnostics check to see if the map sensors are working the way they should. i believe that the computer should activate the fuel injectors to send a richer mixture when it senses the that the throttle is gunned. but it doesnt seem to do so.

please help. your suggestions and comments are valued.
oh yes this engine was swapped from another engine by my mechanic whom i dont trust. in my opinion he did a really lousy job. yesterday my car started making a rough sound wit hthe oil level in between empty and full on the dipstick. it sounded like valve problems. i took it back today he claims its belt related. my engine just cant keep up with the way i drive sometimes especially under load. im getting real jealous of my fathers v6 avalon but he wont let me trade with him as fuel efficiency should be my main concern

The 2.2 liter 5SFE engine isn't a screamer, especially in the generation 3 (92-96). It has 125 horsepower. It is however, a very reliable engine that will last a long time, given proper care and maintenance. That said, the car should not bog down in any situtation. There is some kind of problem. You don't say how many miles are on the car or what maintenance has been done to the car. A good place to start would be checking for trouble codes. If you don't know how to do this there is a generation 3 manual stickied at the top of this forum. Since your car is OBD1, all you need is a piece of wire or a paper clip.

oh yes it has about 138l miles on it. there seems to be a newer 93 engine put in byt a mechanic whom i do not trust at all. it used to have oil leaks. he fixed that now its making valve noises after a few thousand more miles. ideally i would like to have a 2 door camry with a manual transmission but i cant seem ot find any
