I'm looking into a first car. I'm not familiar with manuals, so I decided it would be best for me to get an automatic ( until I can do better)? I was thinking about a 92 camsry se auto. Do they have any potential?
What's the bolt-on aftermarket for them like, and what are typical stock 1/4 mile times for them?
How much hp can the tranny handle, and what's the best steps to racing in one (launching, and the rest of the race)?
if given the chance, get a standard.....especially if you get a 4banger, cuz the camry's a heavy car.........but if you get a 6, then you may be out of luck, cuz it's hard to find it in stick.....but try and look around.....
and when it comes to mods, there aren't many bolt-ons that will do too much.....there are more parts available for the 4 cuz it shares the same engine as celis, but if you get a 6, then just about everything is custom.....
and quarter mile time stock for a 6 auto would be around a 16, stick, prob 15.5 or so.....give or take a bit.....
but basically, if you want an extremely fast car and cheap mods available, don't get a camry....but i you want something that'll look good and keep on running after lots of abuse, it's a good deal. camry's aren't fast- but they aren't slow either.

Learn the standard. If the only obstacle between getting a manual and an auto is not knowing how to use a standard...then, it's really NO obstacle.
There are advantages between the two.
It really does make a big difference between the v6 camry auto and manual transmissions.
car and driver test for v6 camry se: 7.5 (0-60mph), ET 15.9 @88mph
compared to auto v6 camry: 8.4 sec and 16.5 sec @84mph
I hear good things about the auto tranny for the camry. It can hold a lot more hp than it does.
Personal preference, if you want a car that's easy to improve performance , then the camry is probably not the vehicle you're looking for.

Killacam, go with the stick if you have the opportunity. The auto tranny is the weakest links in most modded cars.
Then again, I'm not sure what your long term plans are. If all you intend to do is get an intake and exhaust and this is your first car, maybe getting an auto until you learn more and get more $$$ isn't too shabby.
I would say the Camry V6 auto tranny (1MZ) would handle 268 WHP and 269 lb-ft of torque with no problems with moderate aggressive driving... that's about 340 BHP
But any more power will result in a "super-fun happy slipping" tranny
If you want potential, look at buying another car. If you are stuck on what you have right now, then find some way to rig up something cool like what I did...hehe Go all custom.
