I have noted that it's there's not a lot of information out there on converting a automatic to a manual. In addition I have seen no documentation on how to do it in a I4 Camry. As such I am writing up a how to as I do the swap to my car. It's currently a work in progress, but my hope is that it will help demystify the process a bit, and help eliminate questions on the subject. I am currently hosting it on Cardomain, but I will be hosting it on my website in a my friendly form when the swap is complete. Well I hope you enjoy. That's for the v6, I am using it as a partial reference as I convert my I4. I think it would help the other I4 guys out there if they didn't have to do any guess work when it came to be time to do their swap.
Im doing the i4 auto to manual swap. Its the same thing really. Im just using a V6 Tranny (E153) instead of the I4.. its a better overall tranny. You will need to find a junked car and grab everything from it, that would be the easiest.
lol, Guess there's some misconception here. I have all the parts I need minus clutch, flywheel, and some misc tools and bearings for the rebuild. I'm working on a howto. If there's no necessity for it I will not waste my time doing it, but if anyone is please let me know. My goal was to go a little more in depth with everything then the v6 swap including prep, walking through the rebuild, and installation process. Post your feelings on this and let me know if anyone would be interested.
i too would love this, unless i can find a manual coupe to buy (i've been looking, but i have to have a black one that's 5spd. and those are really hard to find, so far i've only been able to find auto's that are black).
so i will be doing a i4 auto to 5spd soon too. an in-depth write-up would be great

im interested in doing a conversion. a tranny around this area according to carpart.com would cost me 250 dollars roughly. a flywheel would cost me 50. a master cylinder would be 35. i cant find anything else on there. this project would take a tremendous amound of time and money. i dont think it will be possible any time soon
The guy in CAN paid $980 CAN doing the work himself. I'm paid $480 for parts minus flywheel and clutch with which prices varry greatly, but for oem clutch and flywheel expect to pay somewhere around $400 for the pair depending on what you go for. That's with new toyota parts from 1sttoyotaparts.com so that's around $880 with a used tranny. I'm rebuilding mine and going for better clutch and flywheel so i'm looking at 1480 no labor. Labor would be a half a day to a day depending on the shop. and costs would vary. at 70 an hour for a half a day for two people you're looking $580 labor, so figure $1360 USD as your base price. The work isn't really hard though, so you can get away with the $880, and my tutorial which will be up once i finish my rebuild.
half a day? well im majoring in auto mechanics this year in my junior year and its gonna take up 3 hours of my time
assuming i could get the money for all the parts. i believe i would have to deal with issues like tranny removal. tranny installation. clutch and flywheel installation. shifter installation. master cylinder and pedal installation. on top of that there is no gaurantee that it will work out well so theres troubleshooting and electronic issues. SIGH. thats gonna be a huge pain in the rump. maybe ill just leave it alone.
