knock knock

I really need some help. I recently switch to synthetic when i changed had my last oil change. I quickly discovered after awhile the oil light started to flicker. I checked the oil level and found nothing. Yesterdy I notice that a loud knocking was heard from the valve cover. I spent a night at my girl house and decided to to look it over in the morning. On the way home the oil light kept flashing when i idle then the car stall. Right now I'm switching back to regular oil. Can someone shed some light on whats going on? Right now I'm waiting for my new ported and polised head and turbo to come it. But as of right now I need something to get around in.

Was your oil level still okay? Also, and this is just a thought, but maybe the synthetic worked some crap loose and it was stuck in your filter, causing the pressure to drop.

i just change my oil and its back to the original set up. the only problem i have right now is the idle drops everytime i'm at a complete stop. the car starts to shut off after awhile. I also change the distibuter cap and rotor. all the new spark plugs have been changed and gap correctly. The seem to be nothing wrong with the spark plug wires.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Did you also change your filter when you changed your oil? I did the same thing as you, changed to synthetic and I have had no problems and it is alomost time for another change. What type of oil/filter did you use? I used Mobil 1 10w-30 and Toyota filter. Good luck, and let us know if you find out what it is.

I'm assuming you used the correct viscosity right?

What's the milage on your car?

You mentioned that you changed alot of ignition parts too. Could it be that one of these parts is the culprit and not the oil? Just a thought.

i did get the right viscosity. i have about 127,000 miles already on my car. i don't seem to find anything wrong. but the last thing i want to do is fix something thats not broken. I also checked out the spark plugs and found out that the tip seem really burn compare to the old one. New plugs with proper gap and torque has already been done. going straight to the shop is not a option because of my work schedule.

I just re-read you orginal post;
" I checked the oil level and found nothing."

Your mileage is pretty high. I wouldn't be surprised if the synth. oil did infact leak through your seals.

The question now is...if you put reg. oil back in, will the engine be fine or are you facing a rebuild

They think my oil pump stop working and broke the rod. To get a new engine with 40,000 miles, new axle, and rack and pinion (I have to change the rack and axle anyways) will cost me about $2,000. I don't know if that’s worth it or not. I really don't know what to do right now. This Saturday I'm headed for a shop I hear that sells rebuilt engine. Maybe they could give me a better deal. I hate to leave everyone in TN . thanx for the help guys.

you say you found nothing when you checked the oil level
does that mean you found no oil or
nothing wrong?
if the level is fine and the light flickers it could have been the oil pump or sender unit
but since you said it trys to stall it is probably the pump
the noise may be attributed to the top end not getting any oil causeing the valves to clack really loud
