In general, Toyota engine codes go like this:

The first number is the engine revision.
The next one or two letters is the engine family.
Here's where you usually see the hyphen, then the rest of the letters describe various features of the engine:

E: electronic fuel injection
S: direct injection
F: fuel economy
G: high performance
T: turbocharged
Z: supercharged

Examples:
5S-FE: 5th generation S-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for fuel economy (F)
3S-GTE: 3rd generation S-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for high performance (G), turbocharged (T)
1MZ-FE: 1st generation MZ-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for fuel economy (F)

The engine family will tell you whether it's a 4/6/8 cylinder engine and its layout (just have to memorize it). For the common engines that everyone talks about on this board, the S is an inline-4, MZ and VZ are V6, JZ is inline-6 (from the Supra, Supra TT, IS300, and GS300).

Your 1994 Camry XLE V6 will share the 3VZ-FE with the 1994 ES 300. The engine code itself does not convey any information about the year of the car, although you can narrow it down if you know which engines were used in which cars in which years.

Hope this helps. =)

or don't forget that it could also have the 1mz engine also, if it was produced later in 94....

there are early 94 's without the 1mz?
i thought all 94's came with it

easiest way to tell a 1mz
look for spark plug wires
if you have some it isn't a 1mz

If you look on the underside of the hood, it should be printed on a sticker.
