i know that thay are differnet motor types but what is the dif. between 5sfe and the 3sgte and all the other shit like that.is it the year and the size v6 or i4 i have a 94 xle v6 and all i know is that it is a es 300
The first number is the engine revision.
The next one or two letters is the engine family.
Here's where you usually see the hyphen, then the rest of the letters describe various features of the engine:
E: electronic fuel injection
S: direct injection
F: fuel economy
G: high performance
T: turbocharged
Z: supercharged
Examples:
5S-FE: 5th generation S-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for fuel economy (F)
3S-GTE: 3rd generation S-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for high performance (G), turbocharged (T)
1MZ-FE: 1st generation MZ-family engine, electronically fuel injected (E), designed for fuel economy (F)
The engine family will tell you whether it's a 4/6/8 cylinder engine and its layout (just have to memorize it). For the common engines that everyone talks about on this board, the S is an inline-4, MZ and VZ are V6, JZ is inline-6 (from the Supra, Supra TT, IS300, and GS300).
Your 1994 Camry XLE V6 will share the 3VZ-FE with the 1994 ES 300. The engine code itself does not convey any information about the year of the car, although you can narrow it down if you know which engines were used in which cars in which years.
