Better is a relative term. You will get better mileage with O/D on.

Let me answer your question with a question.

If you had a 5 speed manual. Do you think you would use 5th gear?

Only time to turn OD off is down a long hill or if you know you are going to be pegging the gas in the 'near future' .. meaning 5 seconds. You save some passing time in that you don't have to wait for the tranny to downshift. The other 99% of the time leave the thing on. Lower RPM = less gas used, longer engine life, and a quieter ride.

this question has been beat to hell on here

pretty much, leave it off if your driving in the city, leave it on if your driving in the interstate/highway

if you leave it on in the city, the tranny is constantly switching gears and huting for the right one, causing more stress on the tranny

just keep it on......its not gonna damage any componants in ur car....and if youre really trying to save that extra penny for your gas, than leave it off for city....if not, dun stress ur self, just leave it on.... if you drove ur car on the highway with O/D off, (if you forgot to put it on) you can wear ur clutches.

keep it on.

Leave it on, the auto will decide whether to use it or not, and if you do need passing power just give it some gas and then tranny will downshift for you.

Overdrive is just the transmission's 4th gear. Overdrive just refers to the gear ratio being taller than a 1:1 raito meaning in OD the wheels are spinning at a higher RPM than the engine.
