Cooling fans won't turn on.

I have a 96 v6 with almost 160k miles. While I was ideling at a stoplight, I noticed that the temp gauge was going up almost to red. I turned on the heater to bring down the temp, and the temp went back to normal once I got on the freeway. I noticed that the cooling fans didn't turn on at the next stoplight. What should I check, and is this something that I can fix in my driveway?

It happened to me, my problem was that there wasn't enough water or antifreeze in the radiator, so the fan sensors couldn't read it, so just try filling ur radiator up, then hit the gas and see if the fans come on

Thanks, I'll check, but my coolant reserve tank was full when I checked to see if the fans were turning on.
