upgrading from DOT3 to DOT5 brake fluid?

The service manual for Gen3s says to use DOT3 brake fluid, but I was wondering if there is any reason why someone couldn't use DOT5 synthetic fluid instead. It is rated for much higher temperatures. Does anyone here use a higher level fluid?

I put in Valvoline Synpower DOT 3/4 fluid in my car. I think it has a boiling point of 500 F which would be similar to DOT 5. But it is not silcon base like DOT 5.

DOT 5 brake fluid is a bit different than DOT 5 I think and my or may not be compatible with the brake system. I've heard that it is not compatible with all brake systemps and can cause problem with older brake systems.

Thanks, you make a good point about the silicone, not sure what additional effects that might have. I will have to look into that Valvoline Synpower 3/4 you're using.

I'm using Toyota DOT 5.1 brake fluid in my Gen2, The local Toyota dealer said it is a direct replacement of all the previous brake fluids they used, so its perfectly safe to use. DOT 5.1, like DOT3 and DOT4, is a Polyethylene glycol based fluid (contrasted with DOT5 which is silicone based). Just remember to get DOT 5.1 fluid and not DOT 5 and you can safely enjoy the advantages of high performance brake fluid.

Where did you get the 5.1, was that from the dealer or did you special order it somewhere? My local brake shop had never heard of 5.1 and was unable to get it from their supplier.
