I had to transport a skunked dog in my 2004 Camry trunk yesterday. Is my car totalled or is there some way to get rid of the odor in the trunk and throughout the car? Any advice?
take all the fabric stuff out of your trunk and I would start by using a steam cleaner, you cna rent them from food super markets and the such. Clean it throughly, Air out the car, drive windows down a lot, etc.
I'm wondering if I can remove the trunk liner--the felt-like stuff on plastic backing that lines the lid of the trunk and the floor and sides. Would I be able to replace it with a new liner, or just clean and air the stinking one until it's bearable and then put it back in. I haven't been able to get close enough to see how it's attached.
Thanks--I'll give it another day to air out and then will try removing the liner and maybe shampooing with an enzymatic cleanser on the weekend. Wonder how many clips I can break in the removal process...
You might try emptying a box of baking soda into a flat pan and leaving it in trunk. I've seen that stuff neutralize some nasty odors. Never tried it for skunk, though. Cheap and easy so it might be worth a shot.

The skunk stink is not water soluable, so steam cleaning might not do anything. Use a combination of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and liquid soap. Then follow by rinsing that off with water.
On Myth Busters, they found that skunk stink was most effectively removed by hydrogen peroxide.
^^^^ great info!!!!!! i've always heard that taking a bath in tomato juice is the best way to remove the smell from your body. however, i would suggest the above first. perhaps by putting the hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and misting the trunk fabrics. after letting it sit for a bit, i'd use some good old soap and water with maybe some oxi clean. let it ir dry. if that doesnt help, go to the boneyard and ge a complete trunk fabric and lining set.
Baking soda and combined with hydrogen peroxide will cause a reaction that makes the skunk stink water soluable, which is where soap and water comes in.
