Question Newbie Help--How do i improve performance?

Hi guys

I'm just starting out in the mod game i'm originally from Texas, but am currently in Kansas city, KS for school. TX is so much better than KC hahha

anyways, i've only started adding to my car for about 3wks. I have a 2000 camry LE 4L Auto. In a couple of days, i'm having my Apexi World Sport Cat-back system installed, and then the Injen intake system. Also will be adding reverse glow indiglo gauges and some sporty pedals.

my question is...what mods can i do to improve the performance? Mainly power (hp) and torque. Since i'm a student, i have to choose what to spend my $$$, and i rather improve the performance first before adding stuff to the exterior. I noticed some superchargers for my 4L engine (Ripp modds SC) but that is $3500!. are there anything else i can do becides adding a SC (minor changes like filter, pistons, etc)?

thanks for any help

First off, your car is NOT a 4Litre engine. Unless you did some crazy swap.

As for mods, since you're a noob, I'd suggest you educate yourself before even considering going supercharged of turbo'd. Secondly, you're budget is limited and going forced induction isn't an inexpensive project.

If you're looking to get more out of your car, consider working on the suspension components. ie springs, struts, tires, rims, braces etc...

Just out of curiosity, why did you post the same thread 30 minutes apart from another?

to get to your question, there are really only a few available mods for the camry...and besides forced induction, other mods won't reallly give you any serious noticeable change in engine performance.
lowering springs and kit is a nice way to go. It's comparatively inexpensive and results in a very noticeable difference in cornering, braking etc.
That's where I'd put my money first. you'll notice a bigger difference- more than a catback or intake systemw would similarly do for the engine.

I think he meant it's an I4... sometimes they mistake the I for an L and then sometimes they put the letter after the number.

If you want cheap HP then foing Forced induction is out of the question. If you want really cheap HP then buy some beat up old american made boat for like $500 rip off the polution crap and install NAAAAAWWWWSSSS. then when you blow the heads you won't have wrecked your camry.

Of course no one like driving a boat so just put NAAAAAAWWWWSSS in the camry. Get it done professionally (including the larger injectors) and don't get it set up for more than 200 HP.

There are two problems with NOs

One is that it is so easy to dick with and screw up you ^%&& up your ride.

Two is that one bottle doesn't last much more than a weekend of fun and you can get nickel and dimed that way.

it's all about dedication, baby!

If you wanna increase HP, start saving pennies and recycling bottles for cash. If you're REALLY serious about this, you're gonna have to be super patient and willing to wait the year or 2 (or 3 or 4) it takes to save the cash needed to make some serious HP.

Some options for you are:

Ripp Mods SDS - $3500
Burien Toyota Turbo kit - $2500
Custom turbo
3S-GTE conversion (I don't know if you can even do that on your generation, so don't take my word for it).

Just remember, if you want to get more HP, AND you wanna do it in your Cam, it's gonna take time, patience, and a lot of penny-pinching. Good luck!

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Seriously. Unless you plan on street racing for some serious cash then don't even bother....too much risk.

seriously though I re-read your post and since you said pistons were a minor change.

Consider this ...

Score a 4banger turbo and waste gate from a wreckers. less than $200 dollars.

Pick up an MSD crank fired timing system from Ebay. Depends on how patient you are .. say $150

Pick up an impco 425 mixer an E-type regulator and a shutoff valve from either one of the above .. I got mine for $150 Cdn .. $90.00 US used.

Install the *minor change* pistons .. forged 8:1 compression ratio figure $300 for pistons and $500 for new bearings gaskets etc.

Install the Ign, and mount the turbo. Free if you do it yourself plus $150 miscellaneous parts.

Take your car into a propane conversion shop get the carb etc put in and a tank. Installation - $250, tank - if they put in a reconditioned one $300.

Dyno and tune to set correct timing advance $200
You now have a +200 - 250 HP monster.

Cost everything but piston swap, about 1340
piston swap about 800
total 2140

Passing emissions in any state Priceless.

Me .. I am currently doing all of the above less the pistions and turbo, I have installed a SC off an MR2 on my 4age, I am hoping to get by without an aftermarket ign. Time will when it comes time for the dyno. I am just making custom air boxes this week to fit the mixer. Then next weekend I am gonna start connecting the water lines to the regulator. There is a rally this sunday so I don't expect to get much work done on the 'rolla cuz I will be setting up the echo on sat with the tsd equipment.

Good luck.
