i ahve installed my new CAI from elp but when i start my car it idles rough and "chokes" i here a hissing siound from my air filter and there is black smoke puffing out my tail pipe? what is wrong?
ok, i figured it out. i adjusted the idle speed. now it runs fine. although i still have some colored smoke exiting exhust. i think it is becuase i need an oil change....any ideas on that? Also the filter hissing(sucking air in) is annoying. how do you install it? my pipe is about halfway up in it. would that be the prob?
btw, car runs better and has a nice sound when i accelerate. feels good!
the hissing sound is normal, its just the air passing through the filter and getting sucked into the TB. since theres no more resonator to quiet your intake down, youll get a nice sound at high rpms.
how do find the perfect idle speed. my seems a little strong. when at a red light i have to push on brake harder to keep from rolling. she just want to take off!
also will the CAI be better or worse on gas milage?

CAI improves gas mileage, but b/c of constant high rpm's/hitting the gas hard it decreases. Theoretically if you put the CAI on and drive normal(everyday driving, not racing) it will improve you gas mileage, the K&N drop in also improves gas mileage.

exactly, all it does is make the engine more efficient by freeing up restriction. a turbo will increase gas mileage too, providing that you never decide to floor it

You shouldn't have to adjust anything after putting on the intake. Your idle should adjust itseft back to 700 or so after the car is warmed up. There shouldn't be any smoke coming out of the exhaust either. Everything should feel the same, with a bit more power and a lot more sound (when you are on it)...

Does it smoke all the time or only when the engine is cold and you start it up?
If it only smokes on cold startup the valve seals are worn. Its a common problem on Camry's and I wouldn't worry about it unless it bothers your or the engine burns alot of oil.
If it smokes all the time its either a blown headgasket or worn piston rings.
