Bad dashpot Nix's Transient Emissions Test

My '92 Camry 2.2L has a bad throttle body dashpot (some call these anti-stall). In New York, they have a Transient Emissions test where the tester runs a computerized "joyride", on the gas, brake, accel, decel, etc. according to a profile. With my bad dashpot, the throttle return does a "dance" against the dead pot which lasts for about ten bounces. This trashes my HC and CO for the transient test. Toyota doesn't sell this pot separate, you have to buy the ENTIRE throttle body for $750!!!!!!!!

I'm hoping that some old Toyota hand out there knows if this dashpot is the same as one used on older Toyotas with a carb. Hopefully, I could order it separate from the carb.

The part is also called the throttle opener. Are you sure it is bad? You can test it by applying vacuum. There should be no space between the throttle stop and idle screw. There is also an adjustment procedure.

Have you checked with auto parts and web based stores or carburetor rebuild shops.

Thanks, that would be great.... if it's just a matter of adjustment. I'll check it out.

Update -- 4/25/2007 -- When I pulled the vacuum line off the dashpot with a noticeable
drop in rpms, I started to have doubts about my diagnosis. Seemed to me a failing pot would already be leaking. I changed course, and took the car to Toyota for an upper engine carbon cleaning. The New York emissions test technical bulletins led me to try it out since it is the number one cause of high HC after ignition parts. No go, the car had WORSE numbers after the carbon cleaning. At this point I already had the car at the dealer and it made sense to pay for one hour of diagnosis. ( I had already made sure to throw all the ignition parts against the firewall I could before going for the cleaning, so Toyota wouldn't charge me for the obvious....)

The BEST $92.00 I ever spent! The tech (obviously a master tech in my opinion) found the problem in the hour paid for. There was a VERY SLIGHT nick in the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator. The erratic vacuum was causing the extra spurts of gas during the accel. decel. emissions testing.....Like being in my own episode of "House"!
