I know on mine the filter is accessable from the engine bay, you just reach down and twist it off.
If yours is like this, you can drain the pan first and then take the filter off. There will still be some leakage but not as much.
yup, its not that bad, but i always get something spilling....
usually i just spray some degreaser down there occasionally. i was kinda hoping theres some kind of trick to take it off w/o spilling any oil.
Only thing i can think of is to use a really big rag under the filter when you twist it off to soak, wipe, and cover the filter opening when it comes off...them take it away from the engine as fast as possible
On my filter it is right down in front of me under the hood, I drain the oil, put a rag around the filter, and twist it off fast and flip it up quick, minimal minimal oil drippage then!

I raise it on the lift in back, then invite in whatever kids are around and tell them it's a chocolate syrup machine I'm draining. That'll teach them to talk to strangers!

Oil would cool down too much in an hour or two...and all the dirt and debris that is suspended in the oil would settle and not be removed with the oil when you drain it. If you're going to wait, I'd say wait no more than 15-20 minutes.

After you remove the drain plug, wait a couple minutes. Then loosen the oil filter (just to the point that you can almost jiggle it). Wait a couple more minutes and you should be able to take off the oil filter without any oil dripping all over the engine. This works really well with the 5S-FE. I guess loosening the filter breaks the seal, so the oil inside can drain quickly. Make sure you have drained most of the oil, otherwise you'll make a royal mess. Some cars (I think it was a CRX) have the filter placed (angled down) so that you will always leak oil all over the place.
