I just got a sideskirt and front and back lip. The color is red but i have a black car. What are some suggestions of where I might be able to get it primered and painted at a reasonable price?
What would it typically cost me to have something like this done?
Btw, i have the TRD 6 piece body kit for gen 4 cam
What would this clear coating be? Like what would I look for.
Also if i was to do it myself, what would be the steps I should take to do it so I can consider if it's worth it or if i should take it in a shop instead.
i know i gotta remove the red paint and primer but that's pretty general i need more detailed info, like equipment and steps, thanks!
take some very fine sandpaper, 1400 grit would be ok, and lightly scuff all the surfaces to be painted and remove any chipped or flaking paint. You don't need to remove the red paint, just get the surface to look dull.
Prime with any automotive primer, make sure you lots of light passes to get it smooth. 3 very light coats are better than 1 thick one. The point of this is to have a good smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Primer doesn't need much time to dry as long as you do light coats, give it 10 mins between coats. Avoid high-build primers.
Grab 2 big cans of black paint and spray very very light coats, if you spray heavy coats its gonna run and look like ass. The trouble is that sometimes dust flies around and gets stuck in the surface, best way avoid this is to work in a garage and get the floor damp so dust is less likely to get kicked up, try not to let too much dust in the garage, ie keep the doors closed, spray a light coat, leave. Come back in 15 and do another light coat, leave. Do this until the part looks well covered, a bright light helps.
Once the last coat has dried for a day, come back with a can of clear coat spray. Repeat what you did when you were painting, 3 light coats should do.
let it dry for a few days so the paint cures and then install it.
The biggest thing is not to rush, everytime I fuck somthing up its because I wanted to see the finshed product and didn't pay enough attention.
Black isn't a hard colour to match, so just go to your local parts place and get two cans of quality black automotive paint. There's a lot of brandnames out so I can't tell you which but PPG is awsome paint. If you're really worried about it matching, there are bodyshops that will custom match your paint if you bring them your fuel door or somthing, they mix it and put it in an aerosol can for like 20 bucks.
Deep pretty much said it all. just make sure its sanded good, has a nice coat of primer, and a good clearcoat. also make sure you leave it somewhere where dust or other debris can get stuck in the paint while its drying.
my garage has two cars, it's gonna be tight in there. if i can find a big enough box maybe i can put it in there carefully and seal it up so minimal dust can ever touch it. that's the best way i can think of unless you guys have other ideas
deep your directions is excellent. i've followed them and i already have the kit all primer and painted with the appropriate coatings. tomorrow when it's daytime i will get a better view of the paint job and see if i need to do any touchups. than i will go ahead with the clear coat.
i'm thinking of putting wax after the clear coat, you think that'll help even more? =)
okay everythings done but i don't have that plastic hard light shell surface that i originally got with the RED TRD KIT. is there a coating or some type of thing i can put on top of it to make it more harder? right now feels like a hard wallet or something. looks good though but not the feel, i want something stronger/durable.
