Check Eng Icon-Now What???

Yesterday the check engine icon came on. How do I find out what is being referenced by the light. Can I somehow count the flashes of the icon to read a code? If so how? What's my next step? A 93, V6, XLE with 120 on the clock..Thanks, Frank

First, open the hood and check that your engine is still there.
Second, make sure there isn't anything obvious that's broken.
Third, have it looked at in a shop.

Well, thanks for the response. I was hoping for a little more like i.e. Jumper the A&B terminals at the computer hook-up, turn the ignition to run and count the number of icon flashes between lag times. Count 12 times first to let you know everything's working then a break followed by 3 times followed by a break and then 2 times followed by a break and then back to 12. Thus reading a code 32 which someone here might be able too decipher as a bad O2 sensor, or whatever. Can you do something like that with Toyota?....Thanks, Frank

for the 3s-fe engine the 2 then break then 3 blinks is the "air flow meter signal."

"diagnosis: open circuit in e2 or short circuit between vc and vs"

thats what my repair manul says, could be diffrent from generation to gen.

Frito; Thanks. I didn't mean to mislead anyone. My example was what I'd do for my 91 GM product. I have no Idea what to do for the Camry nor if their is a similar procedure. It appears from your response that there is a Toyota procedure. Could you or anyone explain what the correct procedure is, please. I'll follow the instructions and then report back in an attempt to decipher the reported code....Thanks again, Frank

Yeah it's possible...you have to jump terminals TE1 and E1. It's in my Haynes manual but I'm not about to type it all out.

But turn your switch to on (without cranking engine) and make sure the car is in neutral. Bridge the terminals...flash two times pause and then flash 4 times will give you code 24. If you have numerous codes, it'll go from lowest to highest code, with a pause in between them. It's a OBD1 system so I'm sure you're familiar with it. In the Haynes manual it's in chpter 6.6.

Good luck!
