odd transmission problem
I have a 1990 Toyota Camry with 188,000 miles. It has run excellently for many years.
Recently, the automatic transmission has begun shifting out of gear (as if into neutral) after driving for a few minutes (5 - 20). After waiting a few minutes, it will operate normally, but after a few more minutes of driving, will return to neutral. I took it to a transmission shop and was told only a new transmission would fix the problem. The car has body damage and is not worth replacing the transmission.
What would cause the transmission to engage when cold, lose engagement when warm, then restore engagement after a few minutes' rest? Transmission fluid levels are adequate.
It sounds to me like partial blockage of fluid, and that a good transmission flush might restore performance. The transmission shop dismissed this and said it would be a waste of money.
Thank you for your thoughts -
