Okay guys i need a little help here. I am the not so proud owner of a 87 carmy 4cyl 5speed. The problem is that a long while back(a year or so) i threw a rod. b4 the engine siezed i stopped it and let it sit. I still owe money on this car and want to drive it again as it is nicer than the car im stuck in now. My question is where should i start. Should i take it to a shop, pull out the engine myself and assess the damage. I have access to a big enough shed to tear apart the engine, and most of the tools id need (ill rent the rest) Or should i say screw it and just pull it for a remanu?? Im not sure what it would cost to do any of this and would like to get the car running again! Before it died it was pretty nice. Very clean in and out ran 100% and i liked it, even thought of investing in rims and lowering. Please help me out here guys.
dude go with the re man. unless you are going to do a lot of mads it seems like you just whant it on the road. you can get the japan moters for $300-$400 usd.that is what i would do.
the 4th gen Celi GT also came with the 3SFE, and if you're willing to do a bit more work, it also came with a 3SGE in GTS trim, but you would need a new harness/ecu because the 3SGE is true DOHC while the 3SFE is quasi-DOHC. I think the 3SGE is rated at 130HP, the biggest benefit is that there are more parts available for that motor.
If i were to go with the 3SGE would i need new mounts or anything like that?? Where could i find one w/an ECU and harness and what would it go for, that sounds like a good idea if it wount be redicilous to my wallet!!
One more question for the toyota gods out there. If i do go with a celica engine is there a better tranny out there that i should put in?? I currently have whatever came stock on an 87, whatever that is. I figure i might as well make it faster if im gonna put a new engine in it. And if the engine is comin out might as well do the trans at the same time, just makes sense to me!!

I'd look elsewhere.
If you don't know the condition and mileage of the motor don't buy it.
Is there any kind of warranty on the motor and has it been tested (compression, leakdown, etc..)?
The 3S-GE is N/A (naturally aspirated).
3S-GTE is turbocharged. Comes in MR2 Turbo and Celica All-Trac / GT-4.
