If your talking about the 12 volt power supply in your car, like say for me, I used my cigarette lighter wires, it wont overload it at all. I dont know which lights your using but the mini neon lights are only 1/2 amp to an amp and the biggest one streetglow sells is only 4 amps. It wont hurt it, If anything, blow a fuse.

if u want u can hook them off an independant power source, i.e. the battery, run in inline fuse and a relay attached to the ignition of radio or somethin so that when u turn on the car or radio the lights come on automatic and turn off with the car. then i think u can run a switch on it also that way it can be triggered by the car starting but u can still turn it on or off manually. i think thats a way to do it, thats how it is on my fogs......but whatever u do LISTEN TO 88LE he knows his Sh*t When it comes to electronics and my car i go with what he says(hehhe he does all my electrical stuff) and nothing ever goes wrong and it alwayz looks professional.

jes a suggestion

No. Thats why I told you to use a 12V automotive relay so that you don't draw to much current through the wire that goes to the cigarette lighter. The relay is for safety and i'd rather be safe then sorry.

The +12V wire of the cigarette lighter is used to just trigger the relay. The neons still draw their power directly from a constant +12V source (87 on the relay).

This is how it works. When the relay sees +12V on 85 or 86 (the coil inside the relay) it switches and connects 87 (+12V constant) to 30 (output). 87 is normally open to 30 unless something triggers it (+12V on 85 or 86).

Some corrections here bro. You don't want to hookup the neons directly to the battery. If you do you defeat the purpose of using a relay.

87 on the relay goes to the battery (constant +12V source) though.

You could run a fuse inline with the constant +12V wire going to the relay for safety reasons. Just incase that wire shorts to ground or something.

If you want them to turn on and off with the radio you would use the amp turn on lead or power antenna lead to trigger the relay.

The +12V wire of the cigarette lighter is a switched source so it acts just like the ignition. So the neons will turn on whenever the ignition is on and turn off when the ignition is off.

If you use the radio to trigger the relay you won't need a switch cos the on/off button the radio acts as one.

If you use the cigarette lighter or ignition you would need a switch if you want to be able to turn them on and off manually.

Just sh*t I picked up from taking Electronics in college and working as an installer at my buddies shop.
