Basically if anyone can tell me what(basically everything) I need for this swap I would be very grateful. I have an auto now and plan to go to a manual using a 3sge tranny and I figure I might as well throw in that short shifter while I am at it so if white90dx could provide me with info on that also that would be cool.
You can get the shortshifter made for an '87 to '89 Celica. It fits just fine. I suggest you wait to get it until the tranny swap is done though. You will have to buy the stock shifting mechanism anyway, so save the $145 until you have some extra money.
I can start on the list of parts, but its definitely not complete...
Tranny, axles, shift mechanism, pedals, clutch cylinder...
other little things, like the trim piece for inside the car where you have the gear indicator... You can also buy a 4-cylinder gauge cluster with tach. If you swap over your speedometer/odometer housing to the unit with the tach, everything lines up and its a plug-n-play affair. You will basically want to find a manual tranny Camry in a junk yard and raid it for all the parts you can - then get a rebuilt tranny and put it in there. (easier said than done)
I'm sure there are other people who can help you more with the actual swap.
Good luck!
Charlie

LOL, I'm from the west side of Detroit. My name is Troy. You drive a Camry? Didn't know there were any other people from the area on here other than Clouse and Akhil. You should check out www.xceedspeed.com It's where a $hitload of Michigan car enthusiasts hang out. In fact I think it is the biggest Michigan car site. And the forums are probably the best I have ever been on (sorry toyotanation, lol)
I think I might have to do the same. Last night I drove the car home after my second job. I noticed the hesitation when I shift to 'Reverse'. It was 3:00am and pitch black, so I parked it for the night and got some sleep.
This morning I moved the car for the street cleaning regulations here in NY. Obviously, the problem exists. I didn't get to check the fluid because I was already running late to work (shame on me). I will check it when I get home, although my GUT tells me that the tranny's days are definitely numbered.
I saw a I4 5-speed for sale for $700. I'm thinking about using the car as a donor.
I did a tranny swap with my 82 Corolla, but I don't know what to expect when doing a swap for a FWD car. So, any insight you could provide based on your experience would be very helpful. I also would like to know if any trimming was required where the shifter hole is.

Thanks!
Never did it. Tranny seems to be holding together for now but I know it is only a matter of time. An oil change place checked the tranny fluid like last week and told me it was really dirty, hence the reason it has been acting up but the tranny is so old they are scared if they change the fluid, the pressure will bust the seals and it will go anyway. Oh well. I will have to do something sooner or later.
Frankie, if you are interested, I have a 5spd from the 3sfe sitting in my basement. I purchased it from a guy in WI who said it had about 130K miles. He claims the only problem is that on occasion it pops out of 5th. LMK.

Well.....looks like time and resources are not on my side to swap out the tranny, so I'm going to have to put another "automatic piece of sh*t" in there.
I'm going to check out a V6 5-speed that I just noticed for sale. Supposedly, it's the same color as my I4 (dark blue).
If it's good, maybe I'll get it, then either sell or donate this I4 (after I get some interior parts off of the I4).
