Strange Noises

Im new to this site. Seems good so far from what I've read. I have a 00 camry I thought it had bad rod end bearings. It sure did sound that way. I went to start it to pull it into the garage no noise at all. I revved the motor still quiet. Once in the garage I shut it down. I thought I would check to see if I could hear a slight ticking with a stethoscope. When I started the car the knock was back and it has a rattling or grinding coming from the cam shaft area or towards the top of the engine. These noises are intermitent. Can someone tell me where to start looking? Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Cool

Pull the valvecover off & take a look if you've triangulated it to the valvetrain.

Thanks for your reply toysrme. I realized I forgot to state it is a 2.2 engine. I will pull the cover in the morning and take a peek to see if the cam has triangulated. What is the repair if that is the case? If the timing belt has a lot of slack in it could the valves be a bit out of time and slapping the cylinders? Thats almost what it sounds like. Thanks again for your time and reply.

Cool

Clean the built up oil off & check that the valves are in adjustment.
If they're out of adjustment & the offending cam lobe<s> look OK. Just replace the shims that need replacing. If you push the bucket down, the shims are iron & will jump off with a small magnet.

If a grinding noise, could be water pump or timing belt idler bearings. The A/C compressor clutch can make a knocking noise. Also check for loose or damaged valve train parts.

A complete service manual is available at the link below:

I've decide to put in new main and connecting bearings. I was curious about the grinding or clattering noise coming from the back of the motor. I pulled the dust plate from the tranny. I can see where the flex plate has been rubbing against the back of the block. The rub marks are about 1/3 into the holes on the flex plate. so thats explains the grinding or clatter noise. I turned the flex plate to see if there were any loose o broken bolts to the torque converter; none. I know rub marks on the flex plate is not normal. has anyone seen this problem on the 2.2 engine before and can you tell me what it's from. Could it be from bad main bearings. When I seperate the trans and motor I will obviously look to see what is happening. I would like to know before I get to that step. Thank you for your great replys.

I have the engine out and getting ready to put in new bearings and thrust bearings? Is there any thing I need to know about the Balance shaft assembly or any thing else? Or is there any tricks or short cuts. I've got all the info that Alldata has to offer. Is that info? Thank you for your knowledge.

What is the size of the bolt for pulling the crank timing belt pulley. I usually dont do this but. One thing I would like to stress. Use a very good oil. This engine is full of oil build up. Through the years I've pulled apart a lot of motors. It's been my experience only 2 oils cause build up even with regular oil changes. Where this woman had the oil changed they use one of these oils. I have a 94 Cavalier with 197,000 miles on it. The top of the head looks like brand new. You say with regular oil changes that is normal. But, I don't change the oil in my vehicles. I only change the filter. I have several friends that do the same thing. And 2 of them are retired Ford engineers. If you don't want to find bearing fragments in your oil pan use good oil. And thanks for the info on the crank timing belt pulley bolt in advance.

Question

Standup,

Which two brands of oil cause build-up problems in your experience?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Also, you will need a 19mm socket on the crank pulley bolt. As far as the bolt size used for the puller, I'm not sure as the bolts for my puller are all mixed together in a bag and I just try a bunch of them until I find some that fit.

FWIW, my FSM (my car is in my signature) lists Toyota part numbers for two sizes of bolt to use in the puller (apparently there were two different types of pulleys used in my engine). They are:

09954-05020, and

09954-05010

You may be able to enter these part numbers into one of the Toyota parts web sites and get bolt sizes.

Good luck!
