i have an 88 camry wagon with 270k miles on it. engine runs like a champ. yet for a while the body has been starting to make a lot of noise. creaking and moaning when going around corners etc. now it is suddenly making a thump, thump thump sound. it almost is like i am going over lots of evenly spaced bumps in the road - but it just does it at certain speeds, etc.

can this be a result of an old serpentine belt. i noticed mine needs to be replaced.

creaking and moaning might be the struts... any idea when they were last changed? they usually last over 100k miles but less than 150k i think...

i would say check your front and rear swaybar bushings and control arms...

i would suggest checking out your axles and cv joints/boots...i had the same thumping sound and it turned out to be a messed up left axle....oh yeah...it sucked

well - i tool the car in with all it's noises. basically the mechanic told me later in the day that he would junk the car. he listed so many problems that even he did not know where to begin. how sad. the car runs great. engine is strong. just the body can't keep up. among the prolems:

rear motor mount broken, front axles are shot or something like that, new struts, shocks and all that jazz, new belts all around, and the list goes on. what a bummer. maybe i will make the car into a lawn mower.
