hey yall, ive been researching the 3S-GTE swap for a while now. and not knowing alot about transmissions. im confused on what trans to use when swaping it into a FWD 86 camry. i think im right in saying that the engine will fit since its an S- block engine, but im not sure about the trans and what should i do after buying the engine, should i use the MR2 gearbox? or the Camry V6 5spd gearbox? im pretty sure i got everything figured out except the trans. i am 16 and a Junior in high schoool. and i hope to have the swap done by my senior year.
sorry for the length. hope yall read it and can help me out. k peacee.
edit: i know its an 86 and i would be better buying a new car, but i dont care, i came home from the hospital in this car. and its the only one at the school. so dont try to convince me not to do the swap. if it fits. im gonna do it. peacee.
86 camry, 16 years old, only car? 3SGTE swap is a bad idea.
do a search if you must its all been asked before, but i know when i was 16, i barely had gas money, much less 10k to drop on a 20 year old car.
lol i know its a bad idea. but i did some research on here and found out some good info. but its not gonna cost 10k. me and my friends have alot of connections and installs can happen for free. maybe up to 3k for the engine, and 1k for the axles and suspension upgrades. 1k for exahust maybe and 300 something for extras. so maybe 5-6k but not 10k. and 12 an hr as a lifeguard is enough money, and my mom pays for gas lol. i wanna have this swap. it will be the only 1986 camry with it. UNIQUE.
all i can say is that if he ends up doing it, thatll be some fast sleeper.
my advice is that if you dont know what transmission to use then SEARCH. you will have more questions as you progess and youll have much more questions answered that way. youll learn alot more too.

yeah 5 mins into searching and i found 234234 answers lol, and that there is alot more stuff than i thought. like wiring problems and that i might have to get custom engine mounts b/c the gen 1 isnt the same as the gen 2.
e153 is pretty much the only FWD tranny that's gonna hold the power w/o falling apart
yeah i found a site that has how to convert the gearboxs and stuff, and the axles. so i think im set on the transmission. now all im confused on is the motor mounts and the wiring. but i guess that all has to be worked out after the swap has began. oh well. lol summer is a ways away still so i stll have months to save and plan. and christmas lol maybe i can get some parts for christmas and put them in storage,
land 12 an hr as a lifeguard is enough money, and my mom pays for gas lol
...I wish my mom would pay for my gas... I'm jealous now.
All I can suggest, working on cars a few more years than you, is to expect the unexpected. Swaps of this type just don't "drop in" and you're doing the right thing by doing your homework on the front-end. Hope your endeavor goes well.
