Totaled Camry

On Nov. 12 I was stopped at a red light when the driver of a Ford Explorer apparently didn't see the light or me and the other 2 stopped cars. She hit me at full speed (~65mph) offset to the driver's side. This knocked me into the car in the next lane. We spun around banging on each other several times and finally landed facing 180 degrees from where we started. They had to cut me out of the car. I wound up with 6 broken ribs, a broken arm, and a concussion. I spent 8 days in the hospital, 5 of which were in the ICU. While in the hospital I got a case of pneumonia that was resolved before they let me out.

My wife got lucky and only wound up with a mild concussion. I was the only one involved that was seriously injured.

May she RIP

The hit by a Ford Explorer with 65mph is catastrophic, I am glad that you are ok now. The car body didn't distort a lot so it protect you. Of course if you are in a hummer, it will be much different.

Well, my 79 Supra was hit by 2005 Nissan Centra in the same situation but at 35 mph.The force was great enough to bend the rear of the car, pop open the gas tank and push the car forward 50 feet. In addition, the parking brake cables tensioned themself as the floor bent up.
My drivers seat back absorbed most of the impact and collapsed back so I avoided severe injury.

I feel your pain; literally. My wife and I had something similiar happen in our 98 Camry this past August. Just as you were, we were sitting at a stoplight when we were rear ended by a 1996 Dodge full size Ram Van going around 50 MPH. Our hit was square in the rear. The rear collasped, the back window imploded, and the backs of both our front seats collasped from the force of our bodies being slammed against them. Then we were forced in to the pickup truck in front of us. The front end collasped and the air bags deployed. We were lucky enough to be able to walk away with just cuts and bruises and general soreness. We went immediately to the emergency room to get checked out. They released us both after their exam and a few x-rays. For the next couple of weeks we were coming up with black and blue marks in places where we didn't even know we had places. For the first 2 weeks I couldn't stand for more than 2 minutes without the pain in my lower back being excrutiating. My lower back was giving me pain for about 5-6 weeks after. The pain finally subsided after that. We were a bit luckier than you, but I'm glad you are out of the hospital and doing a bit better.

The rear end of our car was bad, but not as bad as the rear in your's. The front end of our car was about the same as your's. The passenger compartment in our car was pretty much intact. Either the front or the back of our car would have totaled the vehicle, not to mention both front airbags, the rear window, the front seats and the mechanical damage to the engine. All in all, I think both of our cars did their job and gave up their lives to save our's. We really miss that car but our 07 which replaced it is really nice.

I'll hope you have a speedy recovery.

Good luck.

Mike

Sorry to hear you too. If both of you ended with the SUV, does it mean that Camry's tail can be easily overlooked? I always turn on the low beam, the taillight is on as well, just want to let other see me ahead and behind me easier.

Wow

Consider yourself lucky. I'm glad nobody was in the backseat either. Toyota's are built tough...on the other hand I think in the not too distant future we're going to be hearing about Scion lawsuits. Those cars are like tin cans and every Scion accident I have seen has been even more devastating. Recouperate and sue the shit out of her. Jon.
