valve cover hose/tube to intake question

i was wondering what's the purpose and name of the valve cover hose that connects to the stock airbox on my 1998 camry v6?

i'm planning to saw off the tubing right before the MAF sensor and clamp on a k&n filter but if i do that i won't have anything for that hose to connect to due to the fact that the airbox and maf adapter is in one piece.

so if anyone knows what i can do to either custom fit a connect to the existing maf adapter or reroute that hose or use something for it to connect to then that would be good too.

quick responses appreciated as i plan to do this soon thanks.

It's the Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve (PCV). It takes gasses from the engine's crankcase and feeds it back into your intake system...well, it's really sucked back in and burned up. It's part of the emissions system so that the gases and vapors aren't spewed out into the environment. You'll also see some oily crap go through this tube as well....

What you can do is put on a breather on the valve...looks like a tiny K&N air filter... you won't have to have that hose to your intake. From searching the web, the benefits could be:

Loss of power, oil dilution and even engine failure are avoided
Oil life is extended and engine lubrication is improved
Oil consumption, rough idle and air filter contamination are avoided

Not sure if they're true, trying doing some more searches. I don't think it'll have much benefit performance wise...but I'm no expert on this.

I just reread your post...are you planning on ditching the MAF sensor??? You can't do that....but you can remove the airbox from the MAF sensor, and a 3" K&N filter should fit just fine. I know it's like this for the 94-96 1MZ, so it might be the same for your car.

It sounds like you want to cut off the MAF sensor (including the PCV hose) and then just attach the filter without the MAF sensor...you can't do that!

It should look something like this:

oh no, on a gen4, the maf sensor is part of the airbox so i can't take out just the airbox as the connector for the sensor is part of it.

that's why what i could do is cut/saw off the airbox right after the maf connector so i still retain it and easily clamp on a k&n from there.

the earlier gens maf connector is separate i believe but not for my year they had to mess it up.

but ya, if i can use that mini k&n filter as the breather than that would solve all the problem as i know have something for it to connect to and still utilize a k&n cone with stock intake and maf adapter

if you check out ed & amandas gen4 s/c he used RMM's intake system that has a custom adapter for the maf which is a separate piece by itself but that alone cost $230 somethin and if i cut it and feed the pcv hose to a breather than it would cost me no more than $10 and i can use that until i actually decide to get a aem cai
