88 camry FWD how do i get side gear shaft out?

hello, i'm new to this forum and man, this is an awesome site. This site has the most information on toyotas judging from the numbers of posts in each category. anyways, i need help with removing the side gear shaft. i'm sure this topic has been covered before. i searched but couldn't find anything i thought would help me yet.
the problem: somehow, my driver side axle snapped from where the half shaft bolts onto the side gear shaft and the side gear shaft came out as well. i'm trying to pick one off at the local salvage yard but can't get the side gear shaft to come out of the transmission. how do i get it out? i've tried prying it with a pickle fork and hammer to no avail. the axle is out of the hub. all i need to do is get the side gear shaft out and i'm set. do i just need to pry harder? i've read somewhere there's a release screw of some sort? i am sort of stuck. any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

it has a compression lock ring holding it in. you really need to give it a good solid tug with a good solid prybar

I've had this nasty problem too, you pound and you pry and pull and it wont come out.
Or you can try a slide hammer from harbor freight. You'd need to rig up a chain or cable that would grab the part. And use the slide hammer to pull it off.
