Blinking cruise control light

On my way to work this morning, I tried to engage my cruise control, but when I pressed the button to turn it on, the cruise control indicator on the dash just blinked and I couldn't get it to maintain any speed. I pressed the button on and off a few times and eventually, the cruise control worked.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is the cruise control functionality is linked to another system's functionality? E.g. If the brake lights don't work, the cruise control won't work either?

I drive a 1996 Camry 5sfe automatic.

You need to be above 25mph for it to work.

WickedGen3: Does your cruise control problem go away after a while like mine did? Or is it completely non-functional now?

Did you recently have engine work done? If so... go into your engine bay and plug the cruise control unit back in. It happened to me twice since owning my Camry... Check it out, it might be the cause. (the blinking light is telling you there is something wrong with the cruise control... )

Hmm...no recent engine work done...and the problem seems to be intermittent...it doesn't work and blinks for a while...i turn off the cruise control, wait a bit, then try it again, and it works...
