will tinting windows affect my radar detector?

hey guys

just need a little info. i have a radar detector and was wondering if i tint my windows (not too dark, i believe 35% or whatever is the legal amount in most, if not all, states) will the tinted windows affect my radar detector effectiveness? I have my radar detector attached to the dash, not the windshield. my radar also has the laser detector in it (it is the Bel Electronics 936 detector).

thanks for the help

First of all, mounting on the dash is bad. Second of all, laser reception will be affected by the tint, but all other bands should be fine.

i was just curious, what's wrong with mounting on the dash, and which particular bands will be affected by the tint?

Another reason it's bad to mount on the dash is that if your windshield wipers sit kind of high, they may interfere with incoming signals. I have mine mounted on the windshield a bit higher up where cops can see it real well.

Has anyone tried taking apart a radar detector and wiring it into their car? Mine's 360 and has a sensor on the front and back.

Not that they're legal in these parts, but the higher up you mount it the better. Top of windsheild is good if it is hidden (you didn't hear that from me...)

Lightbulb tints and radar detection

cman2000

dont worry about tints affecting your radar detector...because radar has a longer wavelength than visible light, it can pass through many objects, such as the tinted glass on your car virtually unaffected. if you want to get really sneaky, you could coat your car with radar absorbent paint, replace all glass with certain radar resistant plastics, and avoid all 90° angles, and have a stealth car...

hey disco stu

thanks for the info. i will go ahead and tint my windows. It's ok if the tinted windows affect the laser, because i have never encountered a cop who was using a laser before

As for the other people who asked why i placed it on the dash instead of the windshield, i put it on the dash so that i can remove it easily and store it away. you don't want people breaking into cars and stealing it if it's in site (i sometimes drive to chicago, and the south side of chicago, to visit friends in college there). by putting it on the dash, it uses the velcro thing to keep it in place so all you have to do is rip the radar right off and hide it. i also heard from my friend that using those suction cups on the windshield leaves a mark if you try to take it off later.
also, the velcro/dash setup makes removing the radar easy if a cop stops you (which one did once for a burnt out light i had). even though it's legal here, cops really HATE radar detectors

as for anyone thinking of a radar detector, if it's legal in your state, i would highly recommend it. it doesn't give you the right to drive 25-30mph above speed limit, but makes u aware of cops around who might pull you over for 11mph above speed limit (which a cop did once on me before i got the detector). now, i can honestly say the radar is one of my favorite "mods" in my car

thanks for the help guys
